“Purveyor of Soulful, infectious grooves and a feel-good atmosphere.”
That’s how V-Waxx describes himself as a DJ. Never afraid to go too deep, his musical selections are his own therapy and salvation. Growing up listening to his father playing Jazz on the piano or his mother listening to (James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Patty Labelle, Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes, the O Jay’s) and others. The influence of this sound remains with him to this day.
Although early on in his DJ career he did start out as a Hip-Hop D in Brooklyn, all that did was broaden his musical spectrum. At the age of 17 at the Richard Long audio show in NYC, he was testing out a pair of SL1200. Mixing back and forth. When he was approached by two older guys who said ” Keep practicing and playing because your pretty good” Later he would learn that the two guys were Larry Levan & Frankie Knuckles.
Today, this translates into sets where the influences of Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, Louie Vega, DJ Spen, David Morales are always present. He picks apart and infuses together all the pieces of the music that he loves best. Powerful vocals, Hypnotic grooves. Foot stomping, Handclapping tracks that reach the soul.
A very active member of his community, Nevell Harper aka DJ V-Waxx is no stranger to the ups-and-downs of the music scene. Though he loves playing on the air, in clubs, in the parks in the summertime and special events, his love for music goes beyond the that of mixing tunes. It saved him. He has found plenty of ways to express himself musically. Whether through production, promotion or helping new DJ’s develop their skill set.
I have heard him say ” Music is in my veins like heroin and I’m addicted” Most become better DJs through passion and purpose. He’s no different, but it’s also something about a groove that gets you tapping your feet and nodding your head without you even knowing it. Ultimately, that’s what it’s all about so ” Let there be house.”
